Crowds for Summer

White City Advertisement, Chicago Evening American, 17 May 1922

Tonight White City opens its eighteenth consecutive summer season, where thirty-five million people have laughed and played during seventeen years.

The queen of Chicago's amusements is gorgeously arrayed to receive and entertain the fun-seeking multitudes.

The great park, in its new and spottless dress of white, will gleam as bright as day in the shimmering glow of a million electric lights. It represents a panorama that never fails to fascinate.

New rides and attractions win wide variety, brand new this season, as sure to please the kids of all ages.

White City never grows old becasue the man of today is the boy of yesterday, and somehow we all like to get away from the routine of work and enjoy ourselves in the open, out where starlit skies are the canopy and where fresh air and cool breezes beckon us to rest and recreation.

After all, we are just kiddies, every one of us, and the man or woman who outgrows childhood days is indeed unfortunate. There could be nothing more pathetic in this old world than a person who could not laugh.

Open air dancing on the cool Casino balcony is enjoyed nightly at White City.

This roomy place adjoins the famous Casino and spans the boardwalk in the heart of the park. The canopy of starry skies, a perfect dancing surface, fanned by refreshing breezes and "Cope" Harvey (himself) and his All-Star Orchestra have made the balcony a popular rendezvous for the smart dancing set.

"Cope" Harvey has endeared himself to the lovers of wholesome dancing. The music played by his fourteen-piece combination is irresistible, creating dance enthusiasm.

In the Ballroom, where the waltz and two-step is danced exclusively, Maxham and his music men play. It has been through Maxham's efforts that the beautiful waltz has held its own with the modern styles of dancing. Three places to dance for a single admission price.

The White City Roller Rink is the finest, coolest, cleanest, and best managed skate palace in the world.

Two sides are entirely made up of windows, which, when opened, make the rink practically an open-air pavilion; sunshine and excellent ventilation, the two most important health factors, are thus assured.

It is a mecca for Chicago's best skaters and is the home of the greatest skating club, the White City Roller Club, known from coast to coast for its size, pep and for the brilliant events conducted under its auspices. Over 6,000 skaters registered.

Maxham's Band, playing at the Roller Rink every afternoon and evening, is causing much comment from the skaters by virtue of its splendid music and skating tempo.

Of all new and novel rides "Over the Falls" is IT.

It's a perfect Circus before one gets to the Falls, then it's a riot-- you go riding over, as plain as day, but come out low and dry, which creates a thirst for more.

When you see the American Racing Derby you won't be able to resist mounting one of the lifelike and lifesized ponies.

The same atmosphere surrounds this place that prevails at the famous Kentucky Derby of any big race track.

Ever been up in an aeroplane?

Chances are you haven't, and the Seaplane offers an opportunity to enjoy the same thrills and sensations of an aeroplane ride. It's a totally different kind of pleasure from any you've ever experienced.

You all Noah 'bout Noah and the Ark, but you can't possibly Noah 'bout Noah's Ark at White City unless you give it your personal inspection.

Mr. Mudra, who leased the space formerly occupied by the restaurant and who is installing twelve regulation bowling alleys, announces his equipment embodies every modern improvement and convenience.

The Pep, a ride of which the public never tires, is the speediest in the park. Every dip and curve, and there are many, is deep and sharp and the cozy little red cars make them in breath-taking fashion.

Whoever invented the Ferris Wheel deserves to have his picture in the Hall of Fame, because he put more fun on wheels than any other person.

The wheel at White City is 100 feet in diameter and every inch is a mile of joy.

Baseball is booming. The national pastime is played five days a week at the superb baseball park. High school teams and the semi-pros have booked games.

All aboard! The White City limited is ready to pull out for its one hundred miniature mile run.

The smallest engine, cars and equipment makes this line especially interesting for the kiddies. Grown ups, too, like the novelty.

Just to ride through the winding canals of Venice, with the cool, refreshing water gurgling around you as you drift lazily past the gabled houses and balconies of that quaint city, will soothe and rest both mind and body.

The Fun House has a floor space of 25,000 square feet, every inch of which is taken up with mirth-provoking devices. Everybody visits the Fun House-- just to laugh.

Special attention shown to the children, to whom the Fun House is the only wonder of the world.

Freaks, relics, and living monstrosities in amazing variety have been collected by Gordon and Evans from all parts of the world. The exhibition is one that will hold the attention of the curious public.

One of the new attractions is the Dodgem, a laugh from start to finish. There is no dodging the Dodgem-- you simply must try it.

Operating at right angles to everything else in the park, the Whip literally cracks laughter from the riders. It will snap away the grouches.

Every tour of the boardwalk should include a ride on the Frolic. Rightly named, the Frolic is a genuine frolic for everybody.

Nothing can be compared to the sensation that comes when speeding dow the long incline of the Chutes. It is fascinating fun and is ever new.

All kinds of trouble will be encountered during a trip through the House of a Housand and One Troubles. Getting lost in the labyrinth of mirrors is comical to say the least.

A mile and a half of long, steep dips and sweeping curves is the best description of the Giant Racing Coaster. It is an established thriller and does its share to make people happier.

Many concessions and games can be found in great variety along the boardwalk that are new to the public.
