Wieboldt's in Northtown

Opened in 1917, W.A. Wieboldt and Company's second department store was located between Lincoln and Ashland Avenues, just north of Belmont. The main building provided North Side shoppers with seven floors of merchandise, as well as a bargain basement. In 1924, an annex to the store was constructed across School Street and consisted of two floors and a connecting basement to the larger building.

As a discount department store chain, Wieboldt's prided itself in offering Loop-quality goods without the Loop prices. Whereas many downtown stores promised stylish merchandise, Wieboldt's preferred to stress the practicality and affordability of its goods. "We lower the cost of distribution," pledged one ad in 1925, "and cheerfully pass on to our customers the savings made in lower every-day prices."
