The Fair in Oak Park

The Oak Park branch of The Fair was opened in 1929. It was the firm's first venture beyond the Loop and a response to growing concerns, common among all downtown department stores, that increased suburbanization and use of the automobile had, by the end of the 1920s, begun to cut into the Loop's customer base. Not to be outdone, Marshall Field and Company opened an Oak Park branch shortly after The Fair opened its store.
